EMDR is a client-centered approach to psychotherapy that can help people to recover from PTSD, depression, panic attacks, and other anxiety disorders. Traumatic experiences result in emotional wounds and blockages, which can have lasting negative effects in people’s lives.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is based on the concept that the information processing system in the brain gets blocked when traumatic events occur. Such events get locked in the brain with the original picture, sounds, thoughts, feelings, and body sensations, and whenever a reminder of the traumatic event comes up, those pictures, thoughts, feelings, and sensations can be triggered.
Through desensitization and reprocessing techniques, EMDR stimulates the information that have been blocked, allowing the brain to reprocess the traumatic experience. So that the patient creates new adaptive responses, which in turn, alleviates the emotional disturbances and blockages caused by the trauma.
